Background of the Research

1.1 Background of the Research

English is thought in four skills, namely: writing, reading, speaking, and listening. In this sense, the researcher will be focused in writing. Writing is very essential to be taught and considered to be the most difficult skill to master. Therefore, teaching writing is not an easy job because teachers might face several problems in the process of teaching writing in the classroom.

According to School- Based Curriculum  of SMPN 6 Lhokseumawe stated that students are expected to be able to write various genres of writing such as narrative, descriptive, argumentative and expository writing. It means that an English teacher should find a good strategy to make the students be able in writing and the strategy is hoped to solve students problems in writing like; lack of vocabulary, low motivation, lack of ideas etc.

Unfortunately, based on the observation with the English teachers of SMPN 6 Lhokseumawe, English writing is one basic skill of English learning and teacher always pays much attention to it, but there are still a lot of problems existing in students’ writing. They always commit mistakes without enough awareness. They are less competence in writing. The students’s problems that found such as they have limited vocabularies, incorrect in grammar and spelling, poorly structured essays, and unsupported ideas. Dealing with the practice, the students became lazy because they were frustrated when faced some problems in learning how to write.

On the other hand the teacher did not tell the students more about the benefits of writing, so that they did not have a good motivation to write. Furthermore, the teacher did not apply a good and interesting method to increase students’ writing ability. The teacher still used conventional method during teaching learning process. The teacher seems dominating write classroom activities and minimalist the students’ participation in the classroom. Teacher dominates causes the students only wait for teacher to tell them rather than seek and found knowledge and skill that they need. This sometimes makes the students felt bored during the teaching learning process.

To avoid a boredom in teaching and learning process, the teacher is supposed to be creative to create an active, effective and fun learning process. Therefore, the teacher should have special technique or method to make their students interested to learn how to write in English. To get this, the usage of a method or technique must be considered.

According to the researcher, one technique that can be used by the teacher to help the students in developing writing ability is by applying Four Square Writing Method through Microsoft PowerPoint Application. Sometimes a different method can be used to make them easy to write and support their writing activities.

Four-Square writing is a method of teaching basic writing skills that is applicable across grade levels and curriculum areas. Four square is a way to organize thoughts. It can be applied for the narrative, descriptive, expository and persuasive forms of writing. In this technique, Prewriting and organizational skills are taught through the use of a graphic organizer. The visual organizers help students to conceptualize, understand, and structure a piece of written discourse successfully.

On the other hand, PowerPoint is a type of presentation software that allows one to show colored text and images with simple animation and sound. PowerPoint is a useful tool for displaying learning objectives, presenting information to students, giving directions and incorporating multimedia into a lesson.  PowerPoint presentations can be used in many ways in the English second language classroom as well as in other classrooms. PowerPoint can be used to teach new ideas and concepts to students. PowerPoint Presentations also can be used for initial teaching, for practice and drilling, for games, for reviews, and for tests. PowerPoint presentations are easy to obtain, modify, and create. They are versatile and a great asset to any classroom.

To support this thesis, the researcher also put some previous research. The first was done by Manju Muralidharan Priya (2012) in Computer Science Department Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago, Illinois with the title “PowerPoint Use in Teaching”. She concluded that PowerPoint is a very useful aid for teachers when used moderately and prepared correctly. The objective of the presentation must be to engage the audience, help them understand and provoke thoughts.

The second previous research was conducted to teach Senior Secondary School students from Nigeria-Ghana International College, Kuje, Abuja, Nigeria under the title “Using Four Square Technique of Writing to Solve Problems of Paragraph Fragmentation: A Nigeria-Ghana Experiment”.

The result of the research showed that teaching paragraph development with the use of Four Square Writing Technique is the most effective means of teaching composition. Students writings after the teaching which made use of Four Square Writing Technique were better, students were able to identify that a paragraph must have a topic sentence, at least one supporting sentence and one summary sentence.

Based on the previous research, the researcher is interested in implementing of Four Square Writing method through Microsoft PowerPoint Application to teach writing to the second year students of SMPN 6 Lhokseumawe. The researcher also wants to know the advantages and the problems encountered by learners and teachers in using it.

1.2 Problem of the Research

Based on the explanation of the background above, the problem of this research can be formulated as follows:

  1. Is teaching writing through Four Square Writing Method through Microsoft PowerPoint Application effective for students of SMPN 6 Lhokseumawe?
  2. Are there any significant differences in the results of teaching writing using Four Square Writing Method through Microsoft PowerPoint Application and using conventional technique?

Purpose of the Research

1.3 Purpose of the Research

In accordance to the statement of the problem formulation, this study is directed to develop writing skill through Four Square Writing Method through Microsoft PowerPoint Application. This research intends to:

  1. To find out the effectiveness of Four Square Writing Method through Microsoft PowerPoint Application and without it for the teaching writing in SMPN 6 Lhokseumawe.
  2. To know the significant differences in the results of teaching writing by using Four Square Writing Method through Microsoft PowerPoint Application and using conventional technique.

Significance of the Research

1.4 Significance of the Research
In this part of the research, the researcher describes some theoretically and practically significances:

  1. Theoretically, the result of this research can be useful theoretical contribution in teaching writing and can be used an input for other researchers in studying the same topic.
  2. Practically, the result of the research can give the effectiveness to students’ writing skill and the result of this research would be used by the teacher at the school especially in teaching writing.

Hypothesis of the Research

The hypotheses of the research are divided into two kinds of hypotheses:

  1. Alternative Hypothesis (Ha)
Ha: Teaching writing through Four Square Writing Method through Microsoft PowerPoint Application is effective for students of SMPN 6 Lhokseumawe
Ha: There are any significant differences in the results of teaching writing using Four Square Writing Method through Microsoft PowerPoint Application and using conventional technique

     2. Null Hypothesis (Ho)

Ho: Teaching writing through Four Square Writing Method through Microsoft PowerPoint Application is not effective for students of SMPN 6 Lhokseumawe
Ho: There are not any significant differences in the results of teaching writing using Four Square Writing Method through Microsoft PowerPoint Application and using conventional technique


Scope of the Research

1.6 Scope of the Research

To limit the scope of the research, this research only focuses on the use of Four Square Writing Method through Microsoft PowerPoint Application in teaching writing, especially in writing descriptive text. Then, the subject of the research is the second year students of SMPN 6 Lhokseumawe on the academic year of 2014/2015 for the subject research. In this research, the researcher focuses on how the students present the good descriptive text writing.

Definition of key terms

1.7 Definition of the Key Terms

  1. Writing is the ability of the students in creating some words become a sentence indeed a paragraph and a text that has meaning that can be understood.
  2. Descriptive text is a text which lists the characteristics of something. 
  3. Four Square Writing Method is a method applied to the teaching writing by joining the sentences together to form a paragraph in an essay. To use this method, a rectangle is drawn, width exceeding height, and divided into four smaller rectangles of equal size. An additional rectangle is drawn in the center of the figure, taking up some of the area in each of the other four rectangles. A total of five rectangles are thus created. The student writes a complete topic sentence in the center rectangle. The student then writes sentences in the lower-left, upper-left, and upper-right rectangles that develop the thesis of the central topic. Finally, the student writes a summary sentence in the lower-right rectangle. The summary sentence describes how the reader is intended to feel about the topic.
  4. Microsoft PowerPoint is a presentation aid created by teacher by showing the simple graphic organizer of four square writing method. It also used as a teaching media in order to displaying learning objectives, presenting information to students, and giving directions.
